Police arrest armed gunman after incident at ice arena

JEFFERSON COUNTY - Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies have arrested an armed gunman in Lakewood after he was seen with a gun in the parking lot

of the Edge Ice Arena.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, 50-year-old Charles Belter was arrested after investigators spotted his 1992 Subaru.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says the incident started just after 2 p.m. when an ice arena employee saw him in the parking lot with a gun and called police.

Belter ran away and deputies say he went somewhere in the surrounding neighborhood.

"We've got a man who has been seen with a gun making threats to himself and others, so we don't know what he is capable of," Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spokesman Mark Techmeyer said.

Techmeyer says Belter faces charges of felony menacing, felony stalking and violating a restraining order. Investigators say he was at the Edge Ice Arena with a gun because his estranged wife was inside.

A reverse emergency notification was sent to homes within a half-mile radius. People were asked to stay inside and lock their doors.

Deputies say a person who knows Belter was in telephone contact with him and he had made threats to himself and others.

Techmeyer says they saturated the area with officers to find the man.

SWAT officers were also on scene at the ice arena. The ice arena was locked down until Belter was arrested. Parents were then allowed to return and pick up their children.

"It's just scary for a man with a gun to be running around our neighborhood. It is just shocking," Kyle Mastroni, who lives nearby, said.

Ward Street was closed from Coal Mine Avenue to Simms during the search for the man.
